PHOTO CONTEST: We are pleased to announce that this year’s NC Herp Congress will include a Photo Contest! Please read the information below with more details on categories and submitting photographs.
This photography contest consists of three categories: 1) Best Reptile Photograph, 2) Best Amphibian Photograph, and 3) Best Herp in Habitat Photograph.
Each individual can submit up to three photographs per category. Photographs eligible for Best Reptile and Best Amphibian must include photographs containing visible reptiles or amphibians. Photographs eligible for Best Herp in Habitat, must include photographs containing a visible animal and some component of its habitat. This type of photo has become classic and is widely used.
The contest is open to any amateur photographer (<10% of income on photography), who is planning to attend the NC Herp Congress. Submissions need to be in JPEG format and high resolution. No modifications will be done to submitted images except for minor adjustments for presenting images at the NC Herp Congress meeting. Images should be clearly labeled with first and middle initials, last name, and category with submission number (example: reptile1_NAShepard.jpeg). Submissions should include title, photographer’s name, the date taken, and broad locality information (county and state). Images may ONLY consist of wild (non-captive) reptiles and amphibians from ONLY the Southeastern United States (defined by the SEPARC regional boundary). Photographs can be digitally edited but only minimally – heavy digital manipulation is not allowed. Submissions will be judged by a panel of 4-6 people familiar with photography. This photography contest will be judged on the use of general composition rules. Judges are not eligible to submit entries into this photography contest. Winning prizes will be given to winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place entries, but these prizes have not yet been determined. Submit any questions to Nathan Shepard.
To submit images for entry into the NC Herp Congress Photography Contest, send submissions to Nathan Shepard. Please attach a single photograph submission to each e-mail and include desired text (see above). Submissions are due by Saturday, April 14th by 11:59 PM!
1. Contest is open to any amateur photographer planning to attend the 3rd NC Herp Congress. Amateur photographer is defined as a person that does not make more than 10% of their annual income from the sale of photographs (this includes micro-stock).

HERP SHOP: Items for sale will include the usual assortment of T-shirts, books, posters, greeting cards, mugs, jewelry, and other items. Do all your Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, and summer birthday shopping in one spot! Volunteers may be needed to help staff the Herp Shop during the meeting. If you are available and interested, please contact Sandy Durso.
VOLUNTEERS may be needed to help with the registration table in the morning. If you are willing to help, please contact Jeff Hall.
AUCTIONS: We will have both live and silent auctions. The live auction is always one of the more entertaining features of our meetings, the auction will feature the usual (or unusual) assortment of herpetologically-oriented items. Bring money and a bidding attitude. If you have items to donate (literature, prints, photos, posters, artwork, cages, hooks, field equipment, decorative items, toys, clothing, jewelry, etc.), please bring them to the meeting (early), or get them to Jeff Beane before the meeting. No live herps or herp parts will be auctioned, but almost anything else goes (as long as it lies somewhere near the realm of legality). Items donated to the auction are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. All proceeds go to NCHS and NCPARC general fund, which helps support our grants program and other ongoing NCHS and NCPARC activities.
RAFFLE: This meeting’s raffle will feature another fantastic model made and donated by Joe Morgan. Raffle tickets will be available at the registration table for $1 each. You may buy as many as you want, and you need not be present to win but you do have to arrange for someone to get it to you if you are not in attendance. The drawing will be held at the end of the meeting.
There should be jars at the registration table for contributions to the Society’s various funds—Project Bog Turtle, Aubrey Shaw Memorial Stewardship Fund, Project Simus, etc. Contributions are tax-deductible.
